What is the Australian Dictionary of Biography
The Australian Dictionary of Biography identifies itself as:
Australia's pre-eminent dictionary of national biography. In it you will find concise, informative and fascinating descriptions of the lives of significant and representative persons in Australian history.
In terms of a football connection the ADB inclusions can be broken into two groups.
Firstly, the ADB includes a people because of their contribution through football. This group would be a comparison group to inductees in the 'Australian Football Hall of Fame'. Those arguing that the AFHOF is biased towards Victoria will notice that the ADB list (though not as extensive) is quite multi-state.
The ADB includes a second group, which are those who contributed to Australia in other fields, some of which included football. This group is an eclectic group of players, administrators and supporters. A good example would be Australian Prime Minister John Curtin, who played VFA football for Brunswick for a number of years.
Creating this List
At the time of my research in early 2013, there were over 700 biographies returned when the Australian Dictionary of Biography (ADB) was searched using the word 'Football'. Many of these results were quickly discarded, as many people in the ADB are described as schoolboy cricketer/footballers. Further biographies are eliminated when football relates to rugby or soccer rather than Australian Rules. Of the remaining biographies there is a brief mention that the person was on a football committee in a long list of other board affiliations.
The resulting list is of course quite discretionary in its selection and a few interesting characters with only a small football link have found their way in where possibly those with longer association have been excluded.
Overall, the remaining names provide an interesting insight into the game.
Who is on the list
The resulting list of famous/important Australians with links to football include politicians, priests, teachers, soldiers, Jam manufacturers, racing identities and radio presenters.
Who is Not on the list
The ADB only Australians who died up until 1990. This will of course continue to change, into the future.
Comparing the ADB list with the Australian Football Hall of Fame, there are a number of football 'legends' not included, but in most cases this is because they are still living, or died in the last 20 years. An example of future candidates would have to include:
Ted Whitten d1995 (AFHOF Legend)
Johnny Leonard d1995
Fos Williams d2001
Jack Dyer d2003 (AFHOF Legend)
Bob Pratt d2001 (AFHOF Legend)
Dick Reynolds d2002 (AFHOF Legend)
In the spirit of debate, I suggest there are at least two football names that are glaringly missing from the ADB, but are in the AFHOF. Bill Hutchison of Essendon is the only AFHOF Legend who died prior to 1990 who is missing. The other inclusion I would propose is Frank 'Checker' Hughes; A player and coach in Victoria and Tasmania, and with in involvement in football over many decades, and in a variety of roles makes him an obvious omission.
Bill Hutchison d1982 (AFHOF Legend)
Frank 'Checker' Hughes 1894-1978
