Introduction
Coburg is a northern suburb of Melbourne, home of Pentridge prison from 1851 to 1997 and on 'Sydney Road', the main road from Melbourne to Sydney.
Coburg played with the 'Junior League' competition in the early 1920s. In a turbulent period in Victorian football, it moved to the VFA in 1925. Success came immediately as Coburg won the 1926, 1927 and 1928 VFA premierships. Coburg were also runners up in 1932, 1933 and 1934.
After initial success, the club there were grand Final appearances in 1941 and 1959 but it was not until the 1980s when the club tasted a first division premiership with VFA premierships in 1979, 1988 and 1989 as well as Grand Final losses in 1980 and 1986. (Coburg won VFA second Division Premierships in 1970 and 1974)
In 1940 South Melbourne Star Bob Pratt moved to Coburg. Pratt played 40 games for Coburg, kicking 263 goals including 183 in the 1941 season lifting Coburg into the Grand Final
In 1975 Phil Cleary first played for the Lions. Cleary later became Coburg Captain and Coach and was a central part of Coburg's 1980's success.
