Before the Second World War, Oakleigh was an independent city around 14km south east of Melbourne's CBD. Oakleigh's independent identity ended when the urban sprawl of Melbourne extended first to the city and then kept going.

Oakleigh football club was founded in 1891 and according toaustralinfootball.com, the team played in a number of competitions before joining the VFA in 1929.

1904-7 Commonwealth Football Association 1904-7
1908-11 Metropolitan Junior Football Association
1912-28 Melbourne Districts Football Association/Sub Districts Football League

Oakleigh achieved immediate success in the VFA with premierships in 1930 and 1931. After this initial success the team's fortunes changed dramatically and the 1931 premiers received the 1932 wooden spoon and spent most of the remainder of the 1930's at the bottom end of the ladder.

The early 1950's again saw Oakleigh on top of the ladder and the team achieved two more premierships in 1950 and 1952. The up and down nature of the clubs fortunes continued with premierships in 1960 and 1972, but relegation to the second division and second division premierships in 1967 and 1988.
