Introduction
Season and Lead-up
The season was contested under the 'amended Argus system'. This meant that the winners of the Home and Away series (the Minor Premiers) played in the finals series, but if the did not win the Final, then they had a 'right of challenge' to play off against the winner of the Final to determine the Premier Team for the season.
This season Northcote were Minor Premiers, and did not win the Final (against Port Melbourne). Actually, the Final was played but ended in a draw, then in the replayed and won by Port Melbourne by four points.
This meant that the 'Grand Final' Challenge Match would be the teams third meeting in three weeks.
