LEAGUE FOOTBALLERS OF 1950-FULL BACKS Percy Taylor

Argus 6-May-1950 P7

SHANE MCGRATH, Melbourne's new captain, is a man who will have every player solidly behind him. In talks with the players I have discovered that Shane plays a vital part in the club because of the strength of his personality and because of his pleasant good nature and ability to "mix." Therefore, he begins his career as a leader under the happiest possible conditions.

Playing with the seniors in the country town of Boort when he was only 15, Shane's ability was mentioned to Melbourne scouts, and he _ was persuaded to come to the city. He played his first senior game in 1940, when he had four games in all. He played all through the next sea- son-a thoroughly established player. Then the war came, and he missed 1942 and 1943, and played in only the last two games in 1944. On his return he settled down to fine football as a full back, and became the star full back of the League, playing in three successive years for Victoria.

Last year he was not at his best, as he was not well. Now, however, he is "full of beans," and another fine season can be expected from him. He had played 98 games at the end of last season, so will soon be among those who have passed the century.

Shane is assistant manager of a big city hotel. Probably he will be his own boss one of these days.
