LEAGUE FOOTBALLERS OF 1950-FULL BACKS Percy Taylor

Argus 6-May-1950 P7

LAST YEAR was a testing period for South Melbourne, at least five players being tried at full back. LARRY SPOKES, however, did most of the work, having eight games in succession as the custodian. Later he became the attacker. Larry, a nicely built left-footer, came from Colac, and had his first senior game in 1946. He looked a "natural" as a wing half-forward, and there were some who felt the selectors should have persevered with him in that position. When he became full back in. the early stages of last season he was a great success, but the attack languished, and he played the last nine games mostly at full forward. In his first game there he kicked nine goals, and had 25 up before the season ended. He completed his 50th game in the last match of 1949. A good club man, he is married, and is a distillery employee._

LEAGUE FOOTBALLERS OF 1950-FULL FORWARDS

Argus 27-May-1950 p7 The Argus Week-End Magazine

ALMOST by a process of elimination LARRY SPOKES has become the chief goal-kicker for South Melbourne. When he was heard of at Colac it was as a left footed half-forward, just under 6ft., and nearly 12_ stone.

Last year he was placed full back. He remained there until the last seven games, when he was switched to the other end of the ground and made a sensational debut, kicking nine goals against St. Kilda in the match for the Lake Premiership. In each of three other games he kicked* four goals.

Up to the end of last season Larry had played 50 Games and kicked 49 goals. He is a lively type of player who takes a nice mark, and cleverly uses the blind turn that belongs to left-footers.
