SLV Accession no. H2008.122/126

Team:Essendon (VFL)
Location: Glenferrie Oval (Hawthorn)
Date: probably 1938

People:
Charlie Dibbs - Back Row, Second from left
Arnold Maltby - Middle Row far Left
Billy Hall - Middle Row Far Right

Comment

Cannot identify any of the players, but significantly the player on the extreme right of the middle row in this photo is also present in photo 122_238 - Essendon Senior Team 1938 - first left in front row. This would suggest the team here is an Essendon Seconds team, circa 1939.

The grandstand appears to be the same construction seen in the photo 122_182 - Geelong Senior Team 1951. Both the Geelong team and this Essendon (?) team are wearing white shorts. The crowd is small.

Away at Hawthorn (same Grandstand as Geelong Photo)

Charlie Dibbs (Top row, second left) was appointed Essendon Seconds Coach in 1938 after a clearence from Geelong (The Argus 30-Mar-1938 p.24. The identification confirms the photo as Essendon Seconds.

There are a number of occurances in Trove of Dibbs playing for Essendon Seconds in 1938 and none in 1939. Based on this evidence I would date this photo as 1938.

Two Players appear in a 1938 Essendon Team Photo, but these players both play for other clubs as well. As a version of the 1938 team photo exists with all players named on the Frame. These two players can be identified.

A number of players appear to play for clubs other than Essendon. Including Charlie Dibbs from Collingwood (looking a bit older)
