LEAGUE FOOTBALLERS OF 1950 — RUCKMEN by Percy Taylor

Argus 22 April 1950 p.3 The Argus Weekend Magazine

DON CORDNER, of Melbourne, is high up in the list Victorian ruckmen. His friends (Illegible). he could be higher if he wished, but Don still regards football as a sport and a pastime-not the be-all and end-all of existence.

That is not to say that he is not keen. No one can play 150 games -the last 140 of them in succession -if he is not keen. But Don is a doctor, which is a most exacting profession. Because of the demands of that profession he has now decided to give up the captaincy of the club. He took over the leadership in 1948, and had the honour of leading his team to a premiership in his first year. Two years earlier he had won the Brownlow Medal, so he has had a long and most distinguished career, during which he has played many brilliant games, and has also represented his State.

Don is 6ft. 4in. and 14st, so has an advantage over most opponents in rising for the ball bounced in the middle or thrown in from the boundary. He is a superb mark, but an indifferent kick. When off the ball Don invariably places himself in a back pocket, where he is usually op- posed to the relieving ruckman on the other side. In that position he does a grand job with his flying marks and his well-judged dashes, and gives his opponent a bad time.
