Comment

This is the Carlton (VFL) Senior Team photographed at Princes Park in 1939-- or 1940--. Brighton Diggins, who captain-coached Carlton 1938-1940, stands proudly and conspicuously at the side in street clothes. Kenneth Luke (later Sir Kenneth), who commenced his longstanding Presidency of Carlton in 1938, is pictured in the middle row. Absent is goal-kicking great Harry Vallence, which may suggest the photo was taken in 1939 because Vallence departed for Williamstown at the end of the 1938 season.

Further Work Needed

The unidentified player at extreme left of front row also appears in (H2008.122/161), and (H2008.122/6-28. This must be Jack Skinner.

My Guess is Round 9, 1939, Mick Price and Brighton Diggins are not in the photo and it it a home game (this limits the options). The issue is Rod McLean as he appears in the photo but did not play in that match. The Mactch report for round 9 in the Argus mentions that Mclean was meant to play, but had Flu and did not play. So it was likely to be a last minute change for him not to play.

If this is a round 9 photo then the missing player should be from:
McInnes, Charlie
McElroy, Jack

Jack Skinner and Charlie McInnes also played in 1941
