BILL TWOMEY is the chief goal-kicker for Collingwood, but he has been most unfortunate so far as injuries are concerned. A son of Bill Twomey, one of Collingwood's best' wing players, and a former Stawell Gift winner, Bill was playing with Fairfield when he was secured by Collingwood. He played, his first senior game in 1945, and has now played in 81 games and kicked 57 goals.
It was as a centre that Bill first flashed into favour, and in that position made the State side. He is just under 6ft. and weighs 12st. 91b. Not only did he mark well at centre, but he had a long left-foot punt, and tremendous pace, which meant lots of opportunities for forwards.
Officials gained the idea that he could kick goals when, in a semi- final in 1948, he was taken from the centre and sent up forward. There he kicked eight goals, several of them phenomenal efforts. Last year he was again unlucky with injuries, and had only eight games.
Until this year there were two Twomeys in the side, but Pat has now transferred to Warragul. There were hopes of an even younger brother being a star, but he has gone to Ballarat, where he is playing in a team coached by his-father.
For relaxation Bill, who is now 22 years-he played his first senior game at 17-does a lot of running. Several years ago he won a couple of events. He is now looking after the sports store conducted by Ron Todd, who is now in England on a tour.
